If you are involved with business networking sites, or even if you just have an e-mail account, I am certain that like me you will frequently receive claims that you and anyone else can easily make large sums of money through joining some affiliate program which promotes some product or products.
Many of these products are “health” related. Most will involve you purchasing the product yourself, and many will involve what is referred to as an “autoship”. That is on a regular basis you will need to automatically order a minimum quantity of new product in order to stay in the business.
There are programs for “healthy” juice, other drinks, chocolate, vitamin supplements and even magnetic bracelets. The marketers of these products and schemes will no doubt produce countless “testimonials” from satisfied users.
If you are already involved in one or more of these marketing schemes, I wish you well. If you truly believe in your product and you can convince the purchasers to believe in it also, then it will probably work. Having said that, I suggest you don’t read any more on this page. If you do, some doubt may be created in your mind, and I really don’t want to be responsible for hampering the marketing efforts of anyone marketing any product or service.
The beneficial effects of placebos is well documented. Perhaps I am being a tad unfair. There may be some other health benefits from some of these products apart from the placebo effect. I know that there is a lot that we don’t know. But let me give you a little background from where I am coming from.
I have published a brief biography on some other sites, which includes a summary of my work history. One of those you can access here.
My work history is mainly in the areas of education, science and health. During the late 1990’s whilst working full-time as Projects Director for a Division of General Practice, I was enrolled part-time in a Masters of Medical Science degree at the University of Newcastle. I didn’t finish that degree, because I had decided to change my career path. However, I do have enough understanding of epidemiology and other related subjects to know that conventional medicine has changed markedly over the years. Those changes have generally occurred from the results of scientific studies. When some important “health” information is discovered and proven, it will generally find its way into conventional medicine.
During the early 2000’s I was a Head of Faculty at the largest Complementary Medicine tertiary institute in Australia. I was also Guest Lecturer at The Southern Cross University in Lismore, (Complementary Medicine Department) and for Dental Hygiene students at the University of Queensland. In the 1970’s, I owned and operated a health food shop in Albert Street in Brisbane city. In each of those roles I have heard countless claims about the health benefit of various products and procedures.
Testimonials from people regarding the health benefits of a product or procedure I will tend to take with a “grain of salt”. Other empirical evidence I shall treat similarly. If health claims are going to be made about some new product then I need to see the data that has resulted from scientific studies that have been made regarding that product. A clever marketing video is not enough to convince me.
I am entrepreneurial. I am interested in new and innovative ideas and programs. I believe that I am open minded about most things ...! But please, if you are trying to flog off some special healthy chocolate bar that is only available through direct marketing, or you have some “gogo juice” from a special berry, or magical magnetic bracelets, or any other notion of any potion or lotion that will improve people’s health and make them rich in addition ..., don’t waste your time and mine talking to me about it.
I am not anti-direct marketing. I am not against being involved in affiliate programs.
I am very wary of some of the outrageous claims that are being made over the Internet. Not just in relation to “health” products, but also regarding some “marketing” schemes.
Now, having got all of that off my chest, if you have any ideas that may be mutually beneficial to both you and to me, based on projects that you are working on, or based on anything that you have read or know about me, then I would like to hear about them. My contact details are on the page titled Ian McKenzie.
