I'm OK ... You're OK

All or us are constantly learning. That “learning” may be from life’s general experiences, or may be from books we have read or formal courses of study.

An important “learning interest” area of mine has been “communication”. It was a major in my undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree, and in more recent years, I have delivered courses on “communication” at tertiary institutes.

I remember back in the 1970’s, I was enrolled in a Business Studies course, and that course included  “Business Communication” as one of the units of study. That subject covered the ground breaking work in Transactional Analysis (TA) that was being espoused by psychologist and author Eric Berne. Berne’s book “Games People Play” had been published a decade earlier (1964), and has since sold over 5 million copies. This book served as a foundation for many other books written on the subject both by Berne and other authors. One of these books “I’m OK You’re OK” written by Thomas A. Harris (1967) gave a simple introduction to Transactional Analysis, and expanded on the work that had been done by Berne.

Without getting into TA theory to any great extent, let me just crystallise what is important to me in all interpersonal communications from a TA point of view, whether those communications are related to business or not.

We should strive to deal with others from the point of view that “I’m OK and You’re OK” , and all of those interactions ideally will result in “WIN/WIN” for both parties.

I firmly believe that if we all tried to work from that premise, that the world would be a much happier and healthier place.

It is with those attitudes and beliefs in mind that I am building this current web site. Yes, I am looking for help, but only where people giving that help will personally benefit from the giving.

And my aim in life from business projects?

I don’t want luxury cars or yachts or 5 star accommodation or any other possessions which I personally view as needless extravagance. If I were to sum up in two words my future aim of being in business, it would be that I could position myself to become a “Benevolent Philanthropist”.

In conclusion on my “I’m OK You’re OK” page, let me just mention two people (out of many), with wealth and fame whom I admire. The first is Bill Gates, who is very well known as the founder of the Microsoft Corporation. But the work being done through the “Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation” in the area of Global Health is far more important than anything he ever did with computer software. He truly is using his wealth as a benevolent philanthropist. Another is Aussie singer Olivia Newton-John. A cancer survivor herself, she is significantly assisting cancer research as well as giving hope for some of the endangered species of this world.
